Streetcar Named Desire/Coles Notes

This is another classic from my high school days that seems wasted on youth. How can a fifteen-year-old in prep school appreciate the desperation and human frailty of Blanche DuBois? Or the dichotomy inherent in Stanley Kowalski's passionate brutality?

=================================================================================================================
BLANCHE: What you are talking about is brutal desire--just--Desire!--the name of that rattle-trap street-car that bangs through the Quarter, up one old narrow street and down another...
STELLA: Haven't you ever ridden on that street-car?
=================================================================================================================

Many will have seen either the stage or film versions of Streetcar, but reading through Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning play allows for the depression to really set in. Readers may even recognize qualities in friends and family members approximating those of alcoholism or domestic violence.

=================================================================================================================
BLANCHE: A hot bath and a long, cold drink always give me a brand new outlook on life!
=================================================================================================================

There are so many great dialogue exchanges here, outside of the classic "kindness of strangers" quote. I'll snip a few of my favorites.

=================================================================================================================
MITCH: You ought to lay off his liquor. He says you been lapping it up all summer like a wild-cat!
BLANCHE: What a fantastic statement! Fantastic of him to say it, fantastic of you to repeat it!
=================================================================================================================

The abusive domestic relationship seemed a common theme in mid-20th Century America; witness both Streetcar and The Honeymooners. "One of these days...POW! Right in the kisser! One of these days Alice, straight to the Moon!"

=================================================================================================================
STANLEY: When we first met, me and you, you thought I was common. How right you was, baby. I was common as dirt. You showed me the snapshot of the place with the columns. I pulled you down off them columns and how you loved it.
=================================================================================================================

Very easy to get through this in a sitting or two. Very hard not to be emotionally moved, even if the dénouement, vis-a-vis Stanley and Blanche, was not obvious to me after that first reading many years ago.

=================================================================================================================
BLANCHE: Don't you just love these long rainy afternoons in New Orleans when an hour isn't just an hour--but a little piece of eternity dropped into your hands--and who knows what to do with it?
=================================================================================================================

Postscript: My own copy is the mid-80s Signet printing, which includes a 4-page Introduction by the author.

Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level for $9.73

Cheap Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level Discount Review Shop

Let's say you have a capable, intelligent five-year-old child who is having unexpected difficulties learning to read. Parents of other kindergarteners tell you they spend 15 minutes with their children on the reading homework; however, you and your child spend 45, 60, or more minutes doing the identical homework. Further, those unsuccessful marathon sessions end with both of you frustrated and tearful. Sometimes you think your child has learned how to spell simple words, or can finally tell you which letters make which sounds but then, 15 minutes later, he or she has forgotten the information. Unlike classmates, your child has trouble remembering his/her address and phone number or how to spell his/her own name. Your child often means one word but says another somewhat similar to it, like "ocean" for "lotion". Your child may have had speech (articulation) problems as a toddler. He or she has trouble retrieving the name of a known item and, as a result, ends up saying vague things like, "You know, mom, that blue thing" or "the whatchamacallit" or "that stuff."

If this describes your life and that of your child (it was my story and that of my child), RUN, do not walk, RUN, to buy this book. It is the single best, most research-based, yet most readable and parent-friendly book you will ever find on the subject of dyslexia.

Before you ask the public school system to evaluate your child for a learning disability, before you select an expert in private practice to evaluate your child, before you succumb to marketing hype about costly and ineffective reading programs, read this book.

The author, Dr. Sally Shaywitz, is: (a) a pediatrician; (b) a neuroscientist; (c) a professor of medicine at Yale University's medical school; (d) past chair of the National Reading Panel, convened by the National Institutes of Health to report to Congress on the responsible research on how children learn to read; (e) a passionate child advocate; (f) the recipient of many NIH and other research grants to study dyslexia; and (g) with her husband, Dr. Bennett Shaywitz, the founder of the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity.

Google her name if you need any more bona fides. She's simply remarkable.

Dr. Shaywitz's goal in this book is to bridge the gap between scientist and parent and between scientist and teacher. This book is like conversing over coffee with a smart, helpful friend. It uses plain language and real-life examples to translate what scientists know into the everyday language of parents and teachers.

The cold, hard truth is that most colleges of education do an abysmal job of teaching teachers how to teach reading and, as a result, most teachers know next to nothing about what dyslexia is or how to effectively remediate it. (Shocked, aren't you?) Good teachers WANT to help their students learn to read; however, just as no one is born knowing how to parent, no one is born knowing how to teach reading to children with dyslexia. This book will help dedicated teachers learn why, despite their best efforts, some of their students still struggle to learn to read, and what they can do about it.

This book explains what dyslexia is and isn't. For example, dyslexia is NOT a visual problem - dyslexics don't see things backwards - but instead is a language-based (brain-based) condition which can be observed on functional MRIs.

The book also explains why MSL (multisensory structured language instruction) is essential to help students with dyslexia learn to read well, and why it also helps non-dyslexic readers become even better readers. It identifies more than a dozen different MSL methods available commercially. It explains why public schools do a poor job identifying and remediating dyslexia. Some school districts won't even use the word "dyslexia," even though it is an accepted term among doctors, scientists, psychologists, and the U.S. Dept. of Education. You can't address what you don't admit exists! This book cautions you about "quack science" and bogus interventions like tinted lenses or vision therapy.

The book will teach you not to listen to well-meaning but uninformed teachers or friends who tell you that "boys learn slower than girls" or who tell you that grade retention is a kindness since it gives the child "the gift of time." (Check the position paper of the National Association of School Psychologists at [...] on that little myth.) If your child is lagging classmates in reading, then your child is in pain and is feeling stupid. This has short-term and long-term consequences. Do not delay. Buy, borrow, or check out this book from the library, and read it from cover to cover.

My child, identified relatively early, still bears the scars of the painful years. That's the bad news. The good news is that he became a very good reader because of MSL. Age 16 now, he consistently scores in the top 3% of his peers on standardized tests of reading comprehension.

Do not rely on schools to help your child with dyslexia. As Dr. Shaywitz says, YOU are your child's advocate! Educate yourself. Go to U.S. Dept. of Education websites or medical school websites and NIH websites or the website for the non-profit International Dyslexia Association. But the very FIRST thing you must do is READ THIS BOOK!

Textbook used guaranteed Buy Back - A Better Way

Guaranteed buy back textbooks all over the body, creates online and offline. just need to keep an eye out for the right books. - You know what they buy back the textbooks is waiting in queue to offer the cashier your textbook used in university and I hope they give you nothing but small change for it. But now we can guarantee to buy back textbooks.

The shop will tell you what your book if you pay to buy, and avoid the management problems of a bookYou do not need is complete after the class.

Does this work for textbooks used?

Also used textbooks can be guaranteed. The department and teachers at school have with the book for a few years, then the memory will offer a guarantee on this book. Online stores use a slightly different method, but the result is the same - if they see a significant and sustainable use of the book may offer a warranty for a used book, too.

L 'Pay

This division is not perfect, but it is an idea of how to get to the work of these programs. If a college or a text book online bookstore buyback guarantee on a new book offers, are often promise you 50 per cent of the price of the book that you pay at the beginning of the class. Then you add the half when they sell used, for a total of about 75 percent of the price.

textbooks are used in a similar manner but with slightly different numbers. You can make a higherPercentage for your book used to say, two thirds of what you pay for. If you have access to a textbook buy-back guarantee, you get a good deal. You know what textbooks you can sell something, you probably know how much savings, and time. Cool. Manual lathes at low cost and cash.

Online Campus and differences

Textbook buy-back is a bit 'different and in keeping the campus. Need a ship library online, but not on campus. And you have to waitfor the library to confirm your books online. On the other hand, the online store may have a greater response to a selection of books with a guarantee. You may be able to be as a return of the first books in the library. Also, I saw book stores online ready to ship to you so that you can just drop in the mail.

On the other hand, your library will be on campus around, no waiting for a check. They give you money, and we hope that the line will be short.

Bothdecide if the books were damaged before they are charged - Serious damage will void the warranty. Do not drop into a lake, or clip the pages that you like. Some wear is normal operation, some write to highlight a few. You need to have all the pieces - all pages and all diskettes or exercises for students, if necessary, if you bought the book.

Go For It
Can not be expected until they approve all textbooks. I managed to do in different classes, and even money for a book. Butmore than a full term of classes or a year, you should expect to spend some money. In these cases, the textbook buy-back is guaranteed fills the bill, and helps to reduce costs.

Perhaps you'll also have the money for a first run movie ticket - with popcorn!
