Christmas Carol (Oxford Progressive English Readers)

"A Christmas Carol" is not just A Christmas story, but one of THE Christmas stories -- not only is it instantly recognizable by pretty much everybody, but it's relentlessly copied and spoofed in countless Christmas specials. But taken just by itself, Charles Dickens' yuletide novella is a pretty bleak and bittersweet affair, with brilliant imagery and lots of ghostly weirdness.
Scrooge is... well, a scrooge -- a professional miser who hates Christmas, goodwill, charity, puppies, kittens, his relatives, his employees, and virtually everything else except money.
And on Christmas Eve, his dead partner Jacob Marley comes back, wrapped with supernatural chains, and claims that Scrooge is doomed to the same fate. But he has a chance at redemption: three ghosts representing will visit him that night, taking him on a guided tour of Christmases past, present and yet to come.
So Scrooge is transported on a trio of hourlong trips through time. The childlike Ghost of Christmas Past takes him to his bleak childhood, when he was less jaded and hard. The jolly Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to people's homes on the very next morning, specifically of of his nephew and the poor miner Bob Cratchit. And finally a Ringwraith-like spirit gives him a glimpse of Christmas years in the future... a bleak and terrible future, unless he changes his ways.
You can read plenty of symbolism into a story like "A Christmas Carol"; I've heard speculation about Dickens' father, the Industrial Revolution, spiritualism, and all sorts of other stuff. But at its heart, "A Christmas Carol" is the most powerful when appreciated for its story alone -- a story about a greedy, miserable man who redeems himself by learning to love all humanity.
Dickens' writing is utterly brilliant here. Most of the book is bleak, grimy and painted in shadows, with Dickens only rarely holding back from showing the dark situation of England's poor. A great example is the symbolic children Want and Ignorance ("a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds"). As for the Grim-Reaperlike third ghost, it's the stuff of nightmares.
But all isn't dark here. Occasionally Dickens splashes it with moments of crystalline brilliance ("It held a branch of fresh green holly in its hand; and... its dress trimmed with summer flowers"). And as dark as the book is, Dickens offers hope for the future.
He also does a brilliant job with Scrooge, " a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire." Having worked hard to make us hate Scrooge, Dickens then deftly displays his skill at slowly revealing how Scrooge became who and what he is, and slowly redeeming him.
Charles Dickens created one of the greatest Christmas stories with "A Christmas Carol" -- bah humbugs, merry Christmases and all. God bless us, every one!

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin-Complete Summary & Analysis

This autobiography provided an interesting look at a fascinating life. I came away from this book with a deep respect for the way Benjamin Franklin approached his life and sought to improve himself through hard work and careful study. What struck me the most was that he acknowledged shortcomings and made a deliberate effort to overcome them. As an example he recognized that being argumentative and forceful with people carried many long-term disadvantages. So he changed his methods and was better for it, both in terms of "winning" disputes and in developing lasting friendships. As an additional note, some would point out that Benjamin Franklin did not live up to his stated "life philosophy" and may even go as far to call him hypocritical. For me it doesn't matter so much whether or not he successfully lived up to his stated principles, rather what matters is that the principles are valid and a worthy goal for anyone to strive for.
In addition to the life, and life philosophy, of Benjamin Franklin, this book provided an interesting look into life in the 1700s British Colonies. Several things came out in the book that gave me pause. For example, I was not aware that boys were signed on as apprentices to a trade at such a young age (around 10 years old). Learning about the hardships of traveling from Boston, to New York, and on to Philadelphia was also interesting. Additionally thinking about the dangers involved in a sea voyage, from weather and pirates in particular, made me thankful of the ease and safety in which we travel now. In a similar vein, this book provides some great insights into the colonial politics of the time period. Even though it stops short of the American Revolution, the disputes between the colonies and England are clearly present and growing.
Again, this was a fascinating book. It had been on my to read list for some time and I regret that I had not picked it up sooner.

How Spanish Audio books for the benefit of students
There are so many titles of audio books available out there on the market today, produced by different companies in many different forms (MP3, WMA, etc.). In fact, books were generally the audio language used in schools by teachers in the second , struggling students with reading difficulties or visually impaired students. As these audio books to help Spanish students?
Books, audio books and Spanish in particular for children and young people AudioPeople. Parents, children are too busy to be able to, their support person can be one of them for audio books.
These books may be in the form of large gifts, as they usually are products of exceptional quality in those days.
Children and young people can hear and books to learn all this so funny. Children no longer need to learn Spanish through traditional lectures. Today's youth are oftento lose interest in themselves, because only so many distractions out there. With this Spanish audio books, however, learning can be done while relaxing. You can listen while commuting home by bus, while relaxing on their favorite chair or even play on the laptop while surfing the net.
While overall interest and acceptance is high enthusiasm for Spanish audio books in general have met my neighborhood a few objections from variousseveral times. I was asked if these books audio books can be viewed as and when listening to books in Spanish beds are to be considered? Some have even proposed as a fraud, and hold it, like reading!
Before answering this question, what exactly is the definition of reading? If this is a friendly knowledge gain and, if possible reading the topic, content to understand the story or I should say that audio books100%.
We can only think that Spanish is the native language of students we are discussing. You can learn the basic language and can read up to a point. These books can help students to Spanish, to be aware of their reading. Not only can really help students pronounce words correctly and can help improve their vocabulary. Most of these books are Spanish-speaking voices recorded sound soothing, professionaland sounds. to motivate these students to a better overall learning experience.
There are many other ways, students benefit from audio books in general and Spanish audio books. I have not even warmed up but I save for another time.

(This review is for the talking book version of this play on compact disc by the "Complete Arkangel Shakespeare" and published by BBC Audiobooks America.)
"Too hot, too hot!
To mingle friendship far is mingling bloods.
I have tremor cordis on me,--my heart dances;
But not for joy,--not joy.--This entertainment
May a free face put on; derive a liberty
From heartiness, from bounty, fertile bosom,
And well become the agent: `t may, I grant:
But to be paddling palms and pinching fingers,
As now they are; and making practis'd smiles,
As in a looking glass; and then to sigh, as `twere
The mort o' the deer; O, that is entertainment
My bosom likes not, nor my brows."
The above is said as an aside by the King of Sicilia as he observes his Queen with his good friend (who he has known since childhood), the King of Bohemia. This is the occurrence that sparks the King of Sicilia's jealousy and forms the basis of this play (written circa 1611) by William Shakespeare (1564 to 1616).
(Note that this play is traditionally classified as a comedy but is more accurately known as a tragicomedy or romance.)
Having this play recorded on compact disc is a treat. This play (of five acts or fifteen scenes) is presented as uncut, fully dramatized, and accompanied by original music. This recording aids in comprehension by bringing the play to life using the voices of distinguished actors.
Included with the compact disc are liner notes that include among other things a complete cast list and a synopsis of each scene. What I did was before each scene, I paused the recording, read a particular scene's synopsis, and then listened to that scene. Doing it this way resulted in (for me anyway) complete comprehension of this play, something not easily obtainable when you simply read the play.
With respect to the play itself, it should be remembered that in most cases, the characters are not realistic. Jealousy appears with little motivation; characters perform actions that are symbolic rather than believable in terms of everyday life; common sense seems frequently to be lacking. (In fact, this is why many 17TH and 18TH century critics dismissed this play as absurd and totally lacking in reason.)
However, it seems to me that Shakespeare deliberately made most of these characters symbolic rather than realistic. The themes of the play (evil, repentance, and reconciliation) are of such a universal scope that they must be represented clearly in its characters.
This play is famous for the stage direction that Shakespeare gives in Act 3 Scene 3: "Exit, pursued by a bear."
Finally, for those playing this compact disc on their computer compact disc player, beware that a "cookie" of 0.1 KB size is stored on your computer's hard drive. A "cookie" is just a small piece of text and is NOT a virus. It can do no harm but for those that don't want it, it can be easily erased.
In conclusion, this compact disc brings this tragicomic or romance play to life aiding in its comprehension and thus enjoyment!!

Stop paying expensive textbooks
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Students are allowed anywhere in the campus library counter, shock and nausea at the expense of the pound for a semester of courses. $ 500, $ 600, $ 700 or more, passed away just that - a series of books that will use once, maybe twice if they are lucky, take a different turn, which requires the same material. This does not mean that education is not worth the investment or that these books are not valuable. Why are - but what is notBooks reduce the pain of forking over several hundred dollars.
With the development of online distance learning and more, is another development that makes life easier for students. Ebooks to allow a student to register and have access to purchase material for a textbook assigned amount of time. Ebooks are idea for many reasons. First, cost much less than printed books and bound. The savings is more than enough reason to motivate studentsbooks to leave their traditional learning materials and buy all their ebooks through subscription.
Second, weigh ebooks, well, anything. There is no heavier burden to carry around 500 pages of pounds algebra if all the information is neatly stored in a computer file stored on your own or online without weight for you. When taking a full load of classes, or 17 hours of instruction and 15 can really start to add up when it comes to the weight of all books. No student iscarrying a heavy book bag from one end of campus, especially when the classes have a limited window to get half. The severity of the books online is a wonderful perk to save money and buy online booking access.
Another advantage of ebooks is not in line - again. As Rush classmates and wait in endless queues, hope to enter the library to find some better used to buy books and then repeatthe process at the end of the semester, sell books and draw a little 'back costs, you can seat and relax. When you register for ebooks, no waiting in line, do not have to wait for shipping and do not try to sell them the trouble of returning.
There are disadvantages to eBooks? Well it depends on your learning style. Some people prefer the physical book in front of you and are used to learn this way.Techniques can help your photographic memory looking for a traditional book than an electronic book. We are all a bit 'deaf online, web design and only notice when something is really - so if you have difficulty in knowing who continue to read online, ebooks can not be for you.
With another may be that if you wanted a career, or the book as a reference later in other courses, ebooks, and then usually do not offer this possibility. Naturallyhardcover books are often outdated or irrelevant, so that the risk of losing the right information for you later is very thin. After all, you can find the latest online information.
